Donald Trump blames what he calls the most embarrassing day in American history on President Joe Biden, and commentators suggest he will attribute it equally to Kamala Harris as his campaign goes on. The former President was scheduled to visit Arlington National Cemetery to pay tribute to US forces on the third anniversary of the US withdrawal and a suicide bombing that killed thirteen American troops.
The bombing, which occurred at Kabul International Airport on August 26, 2021, also killed more than 100 Afghans. ISIS took responsibility for the attack. During a recent rally in North Carolina, Mr. Trump stated that Vie President Harris was “the last person in the room” when the decision was made to pull the troops out. “She had the final vote. She had the final say,” Trump declared.
A State Department report on the US withdrawal last year placed the blame on decisions made by both President Biden and former President Trump. The report stated that the State Department had failed to expand its crisis management response “to oversee all elements.” At a subsequent press conference, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended President Biden, saying, “He had to make a decision.” She added that the US was involved in a war with “no end in sight” and “he wanted to stop that.”
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has hinted that he will not participate in a debate against Kamala Harris in September. The debate was organized by ABC News, and in a post on his Truth Social media account, the former President called the network “fake news” and asked, “Why would I do the Debate against Kamala Harris on that network?” He ended the post by stating, “Stay Tuned.”
Nevertheless, recent polling shows that the Vice President has extended her lead over Mr. Trump, with commentators suggesting this will expand further in the wake of the Democratic National Convention and Harris’s speech in which she promised to protect rights and govern the country for all Americans. Several surveys conducted during the convention placed Harris roughly 5% ahead of the former President.
