Rudy Giuliani, one of former president Donald Trump’s closest allies, has been indicted on racketeering charges associated with the 2020 presidential election. In a strange twist of fate, the former Mayor of New York City faces the same charges he routinely utilized to prosecute mafia bosses. Giuliani served as a sort of trailblazer during the 1980s, becoming one of the first individuals to utilize RICO, or Racketeer Influenced and Corruption Organization laws against white collar criminals while serving as a Federal prosecutor. Both he and President Trump have been charged in Georgia for attempting to overturn the states presidential election results. The indictment comes after an investigation led by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, an elected Democrat.
At age 79, Mr. Giuliani has had a lengthy legal and political career. Serving as a U.S. Associate Attorney General from 1981 to 1983, a U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1983 to 1989, and then as Mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001, Giuliani is a seasoned political and judicial veteran. As aforementioned, Giuliani used RICO laws to nab numerous high ranking mob bosses in the greater New York City area, including eight members of La Cosa Nostra (an Italian American organized crime organization) in 1986. One individual was assassinated before trial, and three top crime family bosses were convicted on charges associated with extortion and murder. Unsurprisingly, figures associated with mafia have been actively commenting to the media in recent weeks, sharing their satisfaction and approval regarding the former Mayors ironic indictment.
He currently hosts a weekday afternoon talk show on 770 AM radio in the greater New York City area, where he continues to be very vocal regarding his personal convictions surrounding the 2020 election. Guiiani and former president Trump continue to deny any wrongdoing in the matter and associate the indictment with a “witch hunt”- or a politically motivated agenda driven prosecution.
