The 2024 presidential election is less than five calendar months from occurring, and only about one hundred days separate the citizens of the United States from the election day in November. Currently, the contest is projected to be between the former 45th president Donald Trump, and the incumbent 46th president Joe Biden. Biden defeated Trump in 2020 in a close race, and many recent simulations run by the firm Five-Thirty Eight continue to show that Biden has an upper hand on Trump in a projected rematch. In a report updated on July 16th, Biden is projected to have a 53% chance of winning a general election against Trump-, while Trump only possesses a 46% chance. In a 1,000-trial simulation, Biden won 534 contests to Trump’s 462, which equates to about a 3-point swing in Biden’s favor. Despite the simulations, the race is close, with Trump and Biden deadlocked in a dead heat. The contest will likely be decided by a few crucial swing states like Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Nevada, and others.
Trump survived a harrowing near-assassination attempt that occurred at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13th. Trump was speaking to a large crowd in his typical fashion when a young adult male shooter named Thomas Crooks opened fire, grazing Trump’s ear; miraculously the bullet missed his brain by inches. Another rallygoer was not so lucky and perished tragically.
While Trump has gained some sympathy, individuals on the left of the political spectrum are likely to oppose him at every turn as the election nears. The incumbent president, Joe Biden, has faced strong political headwinds as of late, with many individuals calling for him to step down from the presidency after a disastrous debate performance on June 27th. At the RNC, Republicans bashed his Vice President (a potential replacement for Biden), slamming her for her record at the southern border as the nation faces an immigration crisis.
