FDA Upgrades Recall Status

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has elevated the risk level of a significant recall involving MadeGood granola bars. The recall, which affects over 2 million cases of various flavors, has been classified as Class II due to potential metal contamination. This classification indicates a situation where consumption of the product may lead to temporary or medically reversible health issues, with a low probability of serious consequences.

“The food may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote,” the FDA said.

The recall encompasses a wide range of MadeGood granola bar flavors, including chocolate chip, cookies & creme, and mixed berry. These products were manufactured between January and November 2024 and distributed across the United States, Canada, and other international markets.

Riverside Natural Foods Inc., the parent company of MadeGood, initiated this voluntary recall after receiving seven complaints. The company has described the potential contaminant as a “small, flat brush bristle,” which may have been introduced during the manufacturing process.

“We are voluntarily recalling certain MadeGood granola bars as a precautionary measure due to a potential safety hazard. There is a very small risk that some of our granola bar products made between January and November 2024 may contain a piece of metal,” MadeGood stated.

It’s important to note that no injuries have been reported in connection with this recall. The company has taken swift action to address the issue, conducting a thorough investigation to identify and correct the manufacturing flaw.

Consumers who have purchased MadeGood granola bars are advised to check the Best by Date and UPC number on their products to determine if they are part of the recall. The affected items were sold at major retailers including Target, Walmart, Whole Foods, and Amazon.

MadeGood is offering full refunds for all recalled products. Customers are encouraged to return affected items to the place of purchase or contact the company directly for further instructions. A complete list of affected products and sell-by dates is available on the company’s website.

This recall is part of a series of recent food safety alerts in the United States. Earlier this year, Quaker Oats issued a similar recall due to possible salmonella contamination in some granola bar and cereal products. Additionally, Union Seafoods announced a recall of canned tuna products due to a defect in the “easy open” lids, which could potentially lead to contamination with clostridium botulinum.
