A father was found guilty of manslaughter in his son’s death and handed a 25-year jail sentence.
After horrifying footage showed 32-year-old Christopher Gregor forcing his child, Corey Micciolo, to run on a treadmill, which ultimately led to his death, a jury convicted him of aggravated homicide and child endangerment.
A 20-year manslaughter and a five-year child endangerment sentence was imposed on the father from New Jersey. Gregor’s maximum sentence could have been forty years.
Corey’s mom, Breanna Micciolo, spoke to the court before sentencing and said her husband has a mental illness and had a history of abusing Corey.
At sentencing, Corey’s grandma referred to Christopher as a “monster” and recounted a troubling discussion in which her grandchild had questioned why God had not intervened to shelter him from his abusive father.
Ocean County prosecutors maintained during Gregor’s six-week trial that Corey’s death was caused by blunt force trauma, which he sustained in March 2021 when his dad had him run on a treadmill against his will.
The Atlantic Heights Clubhouse gym recorded the incident on surveillance cameras. The footage depicts Gregor repeatedly ratcheting up the treadmill’s pace, sending his kid tumbling face down on the machine no less than six times. According to the court, he reportedly had his son do the torturous treadmill routine because he was “too fat.”
Corey died around two weeks after the brutal workout. A medical professional determined the cause of Corey’s death to be blunt force trauma with a laceration to the heart.
The jury watched footage of the father bringing Corey to the Southern Ocean Medical Center front desk on April 2, 2021. William Doyle, the attending registered nurse, said Corey remained motionless while taking dire, almost end-of-life breaths while lying in his father’s arms.
When escorted to the examination room, Corey did not show any signs that he was able to talk. The severity of Corey’s injuries necessitated immediate action by medical professionals as he had a seizure while undergoing a CT scan.
They failed to revive the youngster, and he was declared dead just before 5 o’clock.
If Gregor had sought assistance sooner, according to the mother, her child would be alive today.
In court, Corey’s grandma testified that she does not forgive “this monster.”
